Madman Strategy Guide

The Madman

No one knows for certain the identity of this masked
and demented murderer. Some say he was confined for
eons in the deepest pit of Hell, a villain so black at heart
that even the Hellbourne treated him as a pariah, yet so
deadly that they were forced to call upon him in their war
with the Legion. Others say he is a man, just a man, but
driven mad by the endless carnage he has witnessed.

Thunderbringer Strategy Guide

This is the same guide do Zeus (DotA), made by MYM|Merlini (one of the best DotA player).
Adapted by tiurush to HoN.

Thunderbringer

Damage: 21-29
Armor: 0
Attack Range: 350
Strength: 19
Agility: 15
Intelligence: 20

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- Hero Abilities

Chain Lightning

The Thunderbringer zaps a target anemy unit with volatile lightning. The lightning then bounces to additional nearby enemy units.

Level 1 - Arcs 5 times, deals 85 damage.
Level 2 - Arcs 7 times, deals 100 damage.
Level 3 - Arcs 9 times, deals 115 damage.
Level 4 - Arcs 15 times, deals 130 damage.
Cooldown: 2.5

Blast of Lightning

Thunderbringer blasts a target enemy unit with lightning, dealing moderate damage and very briefly stunning it. The area around the target is lit up briefly, giving vision and revealing nearby stealthed units.

Level 1 - Deals 100 damage.
Level 2 - Deals 175 damage.
Level 3 - Deals 275 damage.
Level 4 - Deals 350 damage.
Cooldown: 7 seconds.

Lightning Rod

Enemies near Thunderbringer act as lightning rods, taking damage every time he casts a spell. Tha damage is proportional to their current health.
Affects an area of effect of 800.

Level 1 - Shocks for 5% of current hit points.
Level 2 - Shocks for 7% of current hit points.
Level 3 - Shocks for 9% of current hit points.
Level 4 - Shocks for 11% of current hit points.

Lightning Storm

Thunderbrindger strikes every enemy hero on the map with lightning, dealing damage and revealing the area around them briefly.

Level 1 - Deals 210 damage.
Level 2 - Deals 335 damage.
Level 3 - Deals 460 damage.
Cooldown: 120 seconds.

Staff of the Master Upgradeable: Increases damage.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

- Skill Build:
Level 1 - Chain Lightning
Level 2 - Lightning Rod
Level 3-5 - Blast of Lightning
Level 6 - Lightning Storm
Level 7 - Blast of Lightning
Level 8-10 - Lightning Rod
Level 11 - Lightning Storm
Level 12-15 - Attribute Bonuses
Level 16 - Lightning Storm

Justification: Blast and Lightning Storm are maxed as soon as possible since they are his most powerful spells, and Rod is gotten afterwards to add multiple-target damage during team fights. Some people max Chain Lightning before 23-25 but it is actually not always good to max Chain Lightning because you can only re-cast Chain Lightning when the first one is done 'bouncing' and since level 4 hits 15 targets, the cooldown is often over before the lightning finishes bouncing. In rare occasions sometimes you might want to go Stats/Blast of Lightning/Blast of Lightning/Stats/Blast of Lightning/Ult/Blast of Lightning/Lightning Rod/Chain Lightning /Lightning Rod/etc - I'll explain that more later in soloing.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

- Item Build:

- Core Items:
or
2x Talisman of Exile / 2x Fortified Bracelet : I started getting 3 Talisman instead of Ring of Sorcery when DotA's Nerubian Assassin was popular. I feel that maximum hp / mana is very important on fragile int heroes: Feel free to make Fortified Bracelet instead.

Glow Stone : Since a lot of battles are 2v2 3v3 or whatever from full health to death, mass hp is the most important factor for survival. Glow Stone provides great hp/mana for its cost.

Bottle: Enables you to control the lane, have regen, and if you are soloing mid, collecting runes is very essential to your game.

- Luxury Items:

Totem of Kuldra: Lategame, having a guinsoo will work wonders for your team - great stats, imba range, and mana regen, and of course hex is a priceless ability.

Post Haste: It is a standard choice on Thunderbringer for mobility and movespeed.

- Other Items:

Ring of Sorcery You dont see many people going for mana regen or sorcery because those only help with the laning phase and since Thunderbringer is such a glass cannon, he is often focused first.

Other Lategame Items: If you farm more than a Totem of Kuldra etc., you are probably farming too much (taking away from carries) or not fighting enough, or both. Thunderbringer is still very potent late game, but reserve the farm for heroes on your team who are more item dependent.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

- Playing Thunderbringer:
Early Game: For starters, its 4 Minor Totem + 3 Mana Potion + Runes of the Blight . Since I tend to solo middle when I play Thunderbringer, I rush Bottle to get the quick lane advantage. Usually my build is 3 Talisman of Exile , Marchers , Homecoming Stone and Bottle.

Attack Animation: His 'wind-up' (frontswing) is very long, but you can use that to your advantage to 's- cancel your attack and out-lasthit your opponent. Many players rely on Chain Lightning too much.

Lane Control: Chain Lightning pushes the lane and is also dependent on Mana Potions, but pushing the lane also gives you free time to check the runes, so you have to weigh both choices. Both Chain and Blast have a range of 700, enabling you to stay out of danger when casting

Strong Enemies: Against a good laner, Blast/Stats build is needed sometimes . It's important to get early last hits and stats helps with both allied/denied units (obviously, Chain only works for offensive purposes). When dealing with a really problematic hero, make sure you keep a Homecoming Stone on you at level 6 and definitely go Chain. Try to rune whore it with bottle while keeping sentries up (from teammates) and you should do ok. Go gank the side lanes

Oh, maybe try out the stats/bolt build a few times so you can work on last hitting with Thunderbringer
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

- The 5 MYM|Merlini Golden Rules1. Always Blast of Lightning before Chain Lightning
It may seem better to blast before lightning to get maximum effect from static field but if you arc first you may lose your opponent in the fog

2. Always, ALWAYS watch your positioning
Blast of Lighting has a hell of a long range, Lightning Storm has infinite range, and Chain has pretty damn long range too, so there is almost no reason to be 'up close and personal' in battle unless you are chasing down heroes.

3. Wrath for Vision
When trying to kill low hp heroes (low, but not low enough for wrath only) in hard to navigate areas (e.g. below sentinel bottom right tower), use Stotm to gain vision of your enemy so you can bolt them to death.

4. Share control with your allies
Communicating to a teammate to do something is always much slower than doing it yourself

5. Abuse Bolt Range
Try to ninja that extra bolt in before team fights actually start - it has ridiculous range and helps in battles way more than you think

Legionnaire Strategy Guide

Introduction

Stripped of his beard (and therefore, most of his manliness) from his DotA Counterpart (Axe), Legionnaire has to make do with most of the changes in gameplay from DotA to HoN. His main role is to tank for the team while also dishing out tons of damage when enemies attack him. Legionnaire is a decent laner, but I'm going to focus on how to jungle Legionnaire in this guide. There are several differences that are now ported from DotA to HoN:

+ Creep respawn checkboxs are now smaller (you can pull creeps a little bit later and still make it in time to stack the camp)
+ Dark Troll Warlord creep camp replaced with weak Skeletons (can tackle them earlier on for great experience and gold)
+ Replacement of Troll Priests (no more difficulty pulling that creep camp)
+ Creeps don't sleep at night (easier to creep-stack and creep-pull)
- Removal of Satyr creep camp (no more purge, but less weak creeps to deal with)
- No more Berserker's Call/Taunt functionality on neutrals (cannot manipulate their AI anymore)

Bottle for Dummies!

Welcome to Bottle for Dummies!

TThis guide is directed to people who don't know the good and bad points of using a bottle. This is a basic and simple guide, so if you have been playing the game for a while or have experienced DotA before, you probably won't find anything new here.

1.0 - Basics

This item contains 3 charges and can be found on the ''Supply'' section of the shop. Each charge heals for 135 life and 70 mana over 3 seconds with a 0.5 seconds cooldown, but when attacked, the effects are dispeled. This item costs 600 gold. ''Wait, isn't that little? So, basically I just waste 600 gold in an item with only 3 charges capable of restoring up to 405 life and 210 mana maximum? Not worth it!'' This is where people are wrong.
Listen, you don't use all charges at once! You can select when to use a charge of the bottle. ''Wait, so I can use a charge now and recover 135 hp and 70 mana and then a charge in like 10 min?'' Exactly!

1.1 - Recharging

''Recharging?'' Right again! ''Wait, so I can recharge my bottle and make it have free charges again!?'' Yes! ''But how to recharge?'' Simple! You can recharge your bottle at the well or by capturing a rune. ''Wait, what? HOW? I can put runes inside my bottle? How does the fountainr rechar-'' Calm down! Everything at its time!
Let's start with recharging your bottle using the well. To recharge your bottle at the well, all you have to do is go to the well and once there your bottle will recharge by itself. So you'll have 3 charges on your bottle once again!

1.2 - Capturing Runes

This is simple. When you want to bottle a rune, all you have to do is use all your charges in the bottle, click on the bottle on your inventory slot and then click on the rune. Presto! And there you go!
To use the rune in the bottle, all you have to do is click it and the rune's power will start working. Storing runes in the bottle and using them whenever you want is always a good strategy.
Also, when runes are stored in your bottle and then used, you gain 3 charges! So your bottle is refilled!
Reminder: Runes respawn every 2 minutes.

2.0 - Laning and Bottle

''Say what?'' Yes, bottle and laning are combined words in your Heroes of Newerth dictionary. At the start of the game when choosing which lane to go (top, middle, or bottom) keep this in mind: lanes affect bottle's performance.
If you are leveling at top lane, you are only going to get runes at the top part of the river on early game. Bottom is just the opposite, you are only going to get runes at the bottom part of the river on early game. Now that would lead middle lane to advantage, because both top and bottom runes are equally close to it, so it can bottle runes from bottom and top parts of rivers with ease. So, if you are going bottle, keep that in mind, for that might come in handy.
Oh, right, for those of you that don't know what river I'm talking about, it is that piece of water that divides the map in half. It separates Legion's land and Hellbourne's land.

2.1 - Courier

Yes, courier is extremelly helpful and is your bottle's best friend. ''But why would I need a courier?'' While you are leveling in your lane, you have no charges in your bottle, there is no need to go back to the well or go looking for runes to recharge it! Just make your courier do it! Buy the monkey courier and give him your bottle, you can choose either to go to the well and recharge it there, or find a rune and bottle it. That way you won't loose exp, gold, and time.
It is also good to upgrade your courier to a flying courier. Flying couriers have two abilities:

  • One that increases their movespeed for a short duration of time.
  • One that grants them invulnerability for a short duration of time.
These two abilities will allow your bottle to be recharged faster without the danger of the enemy killing your courier. You can also use your courier to scout and look for runes.
Reminder: The monkey courier costs 200, and to upgrade it to a flying courier you must have the following requirements:
  • 200 gold.
  • Have the recipe in your monkey courier's inventory slot
  • Use the monkey courier's only spell to make him a flying courier.

2.2 - Wards

Wards are one of the bottle's best buddies. Buy wards and leave them close to the runes spawn points, so you'll know which rune spawned and where (top or bottom). Even though they are invisible, enemies who are using sight-seeing itens can destroy them when they spot them.
Heroes who have benefits in this are both ''Keeper of the Forest'' and ''Scout''. Keeper of the Forest can put an eye on a tree to watch a rune spawn point and Scout can put an ''Electric Eye''.

Note:
  • The eye on the tree is revealed to the enemy and is destroyed if the tree is destroyed (Runes of Blight can destroy it)
  • The ''Electric Eye'' is revelead once an enemy ''steps on it'' (if they are really close to the eye, it is revealed).
Suggestion: put wards and ''Electric Eyes'' on cliffs and such, so meele heroes can't destroy wards and ''Electric Eyes'' can't be revealed to the enemy, because enemies can't ''step on them''.

3.0 - Runes

There are x types of runes in the game: Invisibility, Regeneration, Double Damage, Haste, and Illusion. All of them will be explained now.
Note: Always look at the timer to know when the effects will end.

3.1 - Invisibility

Will make your hero go invisible when used. This is good for ganks and escaping. When you are almost dying and when you are trying to escape from the enemy, remember to use this rune if it is inside your bottle or if you find it at the river. It is definately one of the games' best ''life savers''.

3.2 - Regeneration

This will regenerate your hero's mana and HP to max in a short period of time; however, this effect dispels on damage and when you reach max, so use it wisely. The effect takes a while to go off, so, if you are not being attacked and if you are full, feel free to use your nukes, for the regeneration buff will recover you back to max again.

3.3 - Double Damage

This rune will double your damage (multiply it by 2x), it doesn't affect magic spells, but it does affect your critical damage (your critical strike damage will be doubled).

3.4 - Haste

This rune will increase your hero's movespeed to maximum (522). Great for chasing heros and escaping from the enemy. Remember to use this wisely.

3.5 - Illusion

This rune will create two duplicate images of your hero. They cannot cast spells, they take more damage from enemy attacks and deal less damage than your hero. This rune is great to confuse your hero and play mindtricks on them to make them use spells at your illusion and make them go on cooldown and make them waste their ultimate spell and/or mana, making it a perfect time for a gank.

3.6 - Location (Thanks
_Archangel_ for the pictures)

Forests of Caldavar

Darkwood Vale

Watchtower

(If you are looking for more info on runes, check out this guide Using Bottle

4.0 - Types of Heroes and How Bottle is good for them!

This section will comment on each type of hero and how they work with bottle. The following types of heroes will be commented on: Nukers, Support, Tanks, and Late Game. The runes that are best for each hero class were analized (in other words, if you have a team with one of each class, and you could choose which rune to give to each of them, you would).

4.1 - Nukers

Early game nukers such as Thunderbringer suffer from low mana regeneration and a low mana pool. Bottle will basically guarantee a good early nuke, and good chases and escapes at mid game and maybe late game. Nukers get benefited with almost every rune except ''Double Damage''. ''But why not Double Damage?'' Simply because Nukers most of the time have small attack power and speed in mid and late game.
Also, most of the time, Nukers go middle lane. So they get a good position and are close to both of the rune spawn points. Best runes: Haste, Regeneration, Invisibility.

4.2 - Strength Heroes

Constantly running out of mana, this type of heroes work very well with bottle. They usually are always requiring mana. Good examples of Strength heroes that works well with bottle are Pharaoh and Jereziah. Strength heroes have fast health regeneration, and they can go out of battle and come back in a quick ammount of time, bottle will speed up your process, and make them be able to go back to the battle completely. Most strength heroes are called ''starters'', cause they start the battle. Good examples of starters are Kraken and Keeper of the ForestBest runes: Regeneration, Invisibility(easier to start the battle), Haste(improves their ''starting'' ability and timing), Illusion(good for tricking someone to make them use spells on the illusion or to not know which one to focus attacks on battle).

4.3 - Agility Heroes

Agility heroes suffer from low max health and low mana max. They have slow regenerations for both as well, so they get really benefited from the bottle's recovery. Agility heroes work awesome with all the runes on the game, of course, they have their best runes as well. Best runes: Regeneration, Double Damage(agility heroes usually have more damage and attack speed), Illusion(since they attack faster and deal more damage, illusions will work better when attacking).

4.4 - Additional Info on Starters

All starter heroes are included in: Intelligence and Strength (examples: Tempest and Behemoth). These heroes get the benefited the most from bottle, since they most of the time have spells/skills that give your team more advantage over the other, so they must always be ready to fight, cause they server as great supporters. If you notice these kind of hero is dying, try to help him, for he is essential in your team. Best runes: Invisibility, Haste, Regeneration.

5.0 - The Battle for the Runes

Having a rune available to you is a great advantage, so you have to be at the constant lookout for runes. Checking every 2 minutes for runes at their spawn spot is very important. Wards, spot revealing abilities (such as Electric Eye [Scout]) are also good, even using your courier to check it and even maybe getting the rune for you is a good idea.
However, the rune spawning spots are dangerous, the enemy team will also be checking there frequently for a boost at team battle. Another tip is to never leave the rune ''about'' for too long. If no teammates are going to get it, get it, even if you don't need it, so the enemy doesn't get advantage (example: getting regeneration rune at full health).

The Big Item Guide 1.6 - 1.7.2 Morph Attacks + Random Stuff

1.6 Morph Attacks
These abilitys gives ur attack some kind of side effect. If im not misstaken there are no conflicts between them like in dota. The Mophs that do not work with eachother are labled as "Attack modifier".

Brutalizer 3100 $ Basher in Dota

The Basher in Dota. In 5v5 the ability to permabash is not particularly good. However you can get this as a last luxury item for the following heroes. Its a 1.4 second bash with 2 seconds cooldown. Not particularly good allthough buffed in 1.42. The reason its bad is because it offers no survivability and almost no damage. And the nature of the item makes you get it on melee heroes with fast attack speed, e g carries. They are often the prime target in team fights. Conclusion:

So if you get Brutalizer on a melee agility hero to early you will still die just as easily, dealing almost the same damage but occasionaly stunning one if you do not get focused.

Usable for three heroes though:

Brutalizer also makes you look un-intelligent! Its true.

Magebane - Last slot item, fast attack speed.
Warbeast - Last slot item, fast attack speed in wolf form.
Madman - Last slot item, fast attack speed with ultimate.

Nullfire Blade 3300 $ Upgradable for 850 gold once. Diffusal Blade/Diffu in Dota

Gives 22/26 agility, 6/10 intelligence, and the ability to burn 20/36 mana per attack. Also comes with 8 charges of purge which is replenishable by buying a new recepie. Purge removes buffs or debuffs and slows for 80% to 0 percent over 4-5 seconds. Very good ganking item. Powerful for all supporters if playing against Jereziah so u can purge away his Ultimate and his spellshield. It also dispels Hammerstorms and Madmans Ultimate.

1.42 Notes: The Nullfire blade is no longer a heavy carry item since it lost its build up towards Geometers Bane. Its now more of a gankers/mid game item. It is however still very useful versus casters. So skip it for heavy carries.

One player in the team should always get this if playing vs Jereziah.

Night Hound - Can be Core item.
Valkyrie - Can be Core item.
Slither - Can be used.
Soulstealer - Can be used.
Andromeda - Can be used.
The Dark Lady - Can be used

Blood Hunter - Can be useful however i feel that there are better gear.
Scout - Can be used.
Chronos - Only if facing jereziah and/or caster teams.

Listing some good candidates to get NullFire Blade if you play vs Jereziah:

Pyromancer - Only vs Jereziah
Nymphora - Only vs
Jereziah
Ophelia - Only vs Jereziah
Glacius - Only vs Jereziah
Hellbringer - Only vs Jereziah
Accursed - Only vs Jereziah
Arachna - Only vs Jereziah

Moved down from green to blue:

Moon Queen - Only if facing jereziah
Madman - Only if facing jereziah

Magebane - Does not stack with his own manaburn.

Shieldbreaker 4400 $ Desolator in Dota

The king of dps items. Very cost efficent. Adds 60 damage and gives -6 armor to the enemy you attack for 5 seconds (longer than in dota). This makes your allies attacks hit harder on the target aswell. The most cost efficient damage item. Very good vs low armor heroes i. e. Strength heroes and Intelligence heroes. A bit weaker vs high armor heroes i. e. agility heroes. Becomes a bit weaker as the heroes stack more armor.

Valkyrie - Can be core item.
Arachna - Can be core item.
Night hound - Can be core item allthough nullfire blade is better.
Scout - Can be core item.
Swiftblade - Very good for fast damage to his ult. Get after Battlefury.
Chronos - Can be core item.
Madman - can be core item.
Soulstealer - can be got, stacks with his - armor aura.
Dark Lady - can be got.
Predator - Core item.
War beast - Core item.
Pestilence - Can be got.
Maliken - Can be got.

Very good vs strength heroes.
Very good vs intelligence heroes.

Very good if you play with Defiler since her ultimate is Physical Damage.

Blood Hunter - Can be got but usually wants other items.
Magebane - bit meh.
Wretched hag - Can be used as second item if you go for the carry build.

Andromeda - She is not a carry.

Bad for intelligence heroes and non-dps heroes.
Not so good vs agility heroes.

Armaddon - Only reason i mention this is that i noticed it beeing recommended in a guide. He turns his back in fights for better tanking. Sure Shield Breaker boosts his Spine bursts... But that means thats its even a better item on all the heroes that can wield it if you play with Armaddon.

Hack and Slash 4500
$ Sange and Yasha/SnY/s&y in Dota

The jack of all trades. 16 Strength (304 HP), 16 Agility, 12 Damage, 15% Ias and 12% Movement Speed increase. Maim slows a target for 5 seconds and has a 16% chance to procc. Best got if you cant farm since the buildup is really easy.

Its better than its Dota counterpart since here we can stack orbs!

Pestilence - Great item on this hero after Shrunken Head. Grants you maximum MS.
Magebane - Gives great bonuses for the price.

Good if you have a really hard time farming anything. Since Hack/Slash are good items that gives nice build up and bonuses.

Maliken - Might be ok, gonna test it.
Dark Lady - Ok on her.
Andromeda - Ok on her.
Night hound - ok on him.
Madman - ok on him if you have 0 farm.
Swifblade - ok on him if you have 0 farm.
Bloodseeker - ok if you have 0 farm.
Moon Queen - Ok if you have 0 farm.
Warbeast - Ok if you have 0 farm.
Predator - Ok if you have 0 farm.

*Note 0 zero farm is if you rip alot and cant get any other gear up except small pieces.

Valkyrie - Bad on her, she needs better damage to carry.
Arachna - Bad on her, really does not need maim.
Jereziah - Does not need maim and does not give satisfactory bonuses.
Accursed - Does not need this.
Pharaoh - Does not need this.

Charged Hammer 6300 $ Mjollnir in Dota

Adds 35 agility and 35 damage. Attacks add a powerful chain lightning that deals 200 damage that proccs 20% of the time. Has an active ability that gives a unit a 20% chance to release a 200 damage lightning if attacked. Very expensive, get only if you have very good farm. Not a very common item since its very expensive and in most cases outshiend by Wingbow and Mock of Brilliance if you want a farming tool. It also has a bad buildup consisting of a Dancing Blade and Thunder Claw.

Valkyrie - Good if you go for Charged hammer / frostwolf build.
Blood hunter - It bounces to creeps giving you HP when you kill them.

Arachna - Can use this.
Soulstealer - Can use this as main damage item.
Generally considered not so good on melee heroes. Better on ranged heroes since they can attack from range and procc more lightnings.

Bad for strength heroes and int heroes.

Frostwolf Skull 6150 $
Eye of Skadi in Dota

Grants 25 to all stats 200 hp and 150 mana (675 HP / 475 mana) . Slows target on attack. Always bad as your first item since its so expensive and it gives no damage. Get this as second or third item if you need the slow and hp / mana. Can be got instead of Behemoths Heart on ranged units. Generally only used on heroes that can farm really well.

Valkyrie - Good for her if you went for the charged hammer build.
Soulstealer - Good for him if you go for a defensive build.

Maliken - Can use this.
Wretched Hag - Can use this as late game survival.
Nymphora - Ok after all your core items are got and you need survival.
Ophelia -
Ok after all your core items are got and you need survival.
Pyromancer -
Ok after all your core items are got and you need survival.
Defiler -
Ok after all your core items are got and you need survival.
Puppet Master -
Ok after all your core items are got and you need survival.
Torturer - Ok as final item.
Electrician - Ok if you can farm it. Point booster is great for him anyways, can be used as survival.

Succubus - As luxury.
Moon Queen - As survival.

Generally considered bad for Strength heroes since behemoths heart is better on them, and cheaper.

Savage Mace 5400 $ Monkey King Bar/MKB in dota

Gives 80 damage, 15 % IAS and 35% chance to deal a ministun that deals 100 magical damage. Has True Strike which causes your attacks to never miss. Good for heroes with fast attackspeed. Shield breaker gives more damage / gold and outshines this beast. But if you can get Savage Mace farmed then ur set. Very good versus evasion heroes like Zephyr, Scout, Night Hounds Smoke Bomb and Wingbow users.

Magebane - Has fast attackspeed.
Madman - Fast ias, critical. This item is good for him.
Moon Queen - Rumor has it that mini stun proccs on every bounce.
Scout - gives good damage.
Arachna - Very good for her. She can farm it quite fast, and it counters her weakness to enemies with town portal (ministun cancel it).
Dark Lady - If you can farm it, its good.
Maliken - Has very fast attackspeed.

Wretched Hag - If you go for the carry build.
Nighthound - Has better builds.
Blood hunter - Its ok, but there is better builds. He needs something to splash on creeps.
Valkyrie - Its ok, but there are better.
Swiftblade - Its ok but there are better.
Soulstealer - Its ok, but there are better.
Warbeast - its ok, but there are better.

Bad on: Strength heroes, they attack to slow to benefit to full extent (except warbeast).

Andromeda - She is not a dps:er.

Symbol of Rage: 6150 $ Satanic in Dota

Grants 20 damage, 25 strength (475 HP) and 25% lifesteal. Active ability increases lifesteal to 150% for 3,5 seconds. Its the definition of the extreme luxury. Get it as your last item if you are rich.

Maliken - Very good luxury on him since he can replenish life fast with this if needed. It aslo boosts HP and gives him life steal to negate the -20 true damage effect.

Moon Queen: Its ok on her in dota due to the lack of items she can effectivly use. But here its a bit meh.

Luxury for late game damage dealers i. e. Madman

1.7 Random stuff

Some worth to mention items.

Alchemist Bones 1900 $ Hands of Midas in Dota

Adds 30 % IAS and grants the ability to turn a creep to gold. It is a farming tool. Only good if got fast as your absolute first item. By fast i mean that you have it within 13-14 minutes. If you get it to late it wont pay off. If these conditions are met use it for:

Keeper of the Forest - Needs alot of farm and has no farming tool.
Chronos - Needs alot of farm and has no farming tool.
Valkyrie - Only good if you go for the Charged Hammer / Frostwolf build since its an very expensive build.
Maliken - Can be used.

Arachna - Can be used if you go for a carry build.

Bad on the rest of the heroes and bad on all heroes if got after 15 minutes.
Dont get it for the ias bonus! Warpcleft costs 2100 gold for 55% ias.

Life Steal ~ 2000 $

The life steal debate. Generally life steal is not considered a very good investment in the beginning of the game in damage terms. Life steal versus heroes before you deal any good damage is pretty useless. It does not help you survive a gank, nor does it help you if you get focused in team fights. It does not work if you are stunned or disabeld and doesnt regen you fast enough after a heavy nuke or two. It is also bad versus creeps in the lane, its very easy to avoid creep lane damage and you dont regen fast enough if you have taken damage from a hero since you should be last hitting! So what does it do? It costs you 2000 k gold, delaying your good gear for nothing unless... You decide to use it as a farming tool in the jungle!

Its very good if you decide to farm in the jungle since 1) you take damage from jungle creeps 2) you need a way to stay in the jungle. So if you get this early game its generally for jungle purposes. Keep this in mind. Also if you want to farm the jungle you need a hero that does it fast. Because if you do it slow its generally better to farm in a lane, gives you more gold and more exp. In other words, the hero needs to be able to dish out acceptable damage versus creeps in early game / mid game. Usually the melee agility are capable of this by lvl 10-11.

In late game however when you have a hero who dish out tons of damage and can not get stunned (because of shrunken) life steal does a difference. So my general rule, if you want to farm the jungle get it. Dont get it if you have no intentions of farming the jungle. However you can get it in lategame because of the good impact it does when you dish out heavy damage.

Remember, this is my take on life steal. I know all players do not agree about this!

Maliken - Whispering Helm - Very useful for him since it builds up to Symbol of Rage and negates his -20 true damage.

The heroes that can use this as a jungle tool

Magebane (Whispering helm or Abyssal skull)
Moon Queen (Whispering Helm)
Chronos (preferably elders parasite)
Warbeast (Abyssal skull)
Madman (Whispering helm)

If the other team does not have any stuns or disabels its good aswell if you have an agility hero that deals good damage.

Remember to use Whispering helm to convert a creep, send it back to the base to stack 10-12 up for later pushes or Kongor Party.

Bottle 600 $

Restores 135 HP and 70 mana over 3 seconds, can be used 3 times. Can store Runes. Refill it at fountain or by putting runes in it. Not really bad on any hero but a core item on most roamers and gankers. But there are some heroes that benefit very much from Bottle. Get it after starting gear, sometimes before Marchers, sometimes after or as soon as you have farmed 1100 gold for Marchers + bottle. Sell this one later if you need item slots.

Wards
200 $

Buying wards and placing them ensures a team victory. Most important spots to ward are the cliffs near the runes. Use sentry wards to remove the other teams wards. Or use them in the lane to show invisiable uints making the laning phase easier. Some heroes are very good warders since they dont need much gear to be useful. These heroes can buy ward of sight / ward of revelation all game long and still be useful. Here is my list of the most potent ward hoes:

Glacius
Pyromancer
Slither
Torturer
Nymphora
Hellbringer
Ophelia
Thunderbringer
Blacksmith
Demented Shaman
Accursed
Voodoo Jester
Succubus
Andromeda

Homecoming Stone 135 $
Scroll of Town Portal / TP in dota.

Teleports you to target allied structure, 65 second cooldown. The second best item in the game. Thats right, only Marchers are better. Always carry 1 or 2 of these. Good for escaping ganks, defending towers, getting fast ganks, finding good farm first (pushed lanes to your side). This is the item that makes a good player. ALWAYS CARRY IT.

Dont be cheap and skip this. Having a Homecoming Stone in your inventory att all times gains you gold and saves you gold! Its true, dont get decieved by its 135 gold cost. Another great thing about it i want to mention... It makes you look really PRO! And very sexy!

1.7.2 Random New Stuff

We have some new items here in HoN. Ill present them in the same manner as above.

Tablet of Command 2200 $ Force Staff in Dota

Grants 10 intelligence 10 damage and the active ability to push a hero 500 range in the direction he is facing. Does not break channeling. Does not get used very often since its cast range isnt that far, around 700-800 range. Can be used as a fun item, or to push an enemy target forward so you can initiate the fight. Portal Key however is often better used for initiation and is often better for escape aswell since it has a further blink range. However this one is fun! Listed in Yellow since its not really awesome on any hero!

Andromeda - Fun, but Portal Key is better.
Pyromancer - Fun, but Portal Key is better.
Devourer - So funny in Dota, but here we can use portal key.

Well, almost any supporter can get it. But its use is so situational its often better to go for other gear like Astrolabe, Portal Key and so on.

Does not work with Hemorrhage (Blood Hunters ultimate). They dont take damage but they are repositioned.

Mana Battery 210$ | Power Supply 494$ Magic Wand/Stick in Dota

Every time an opponent hero casts a spell you get a charge on this little baby for a maximum of 10/15 (depending on if you upgraded it). When you consume the charges you get 15hp/15 mp for every charge on the item. Its very good to upgrade it since the recepie cost is low, it grants 3 to all stats and a good and has a build up from starting gear. Its usable for any hero since it only costs 210 gold. You can sell it for 105, meaning that u actually only pay 105 for the effect which is almost for free.

This item looks bad at a first glance but it is extremly powerful. Versus heroes who spams alot of abilities this reduces damage taken by a significant amount.

Lets take a look on one of the prime exampels: Thunderbringer. He has his annoying Chain Lightning which deals 85 damage. Thunderbringers often use this for last hits and an extra added herass. This little item for 210 gold effectivily reduces Chain Lightning herass with (15/63,75 CL damage after reduction) 23% and it gives you 15 mana to use at free will later on. Well i havent included his passive, but you get the point! The same reasoning goes for alot of the early game nukers: Pyromancers and Torturer. This item benefits you alot and gives you opportunities for low HP battles and surprise instant regen.

Yeah, its instant. A fully charged Battery gives you 150 mana, 150 HP, instantly. A Supply 225. This is more mana than 3 charges of bottle, instantly! You get the point, its a great item. In midgame team fights the charges tends to stack up very fast aswell. Its heal is could almost be compared to an Astrolabe. Its a great item, Use it, try it. You will like it versus most teams. One extra note is that it gets charges from fogged units aswell. So if you get a charge and you cant se the hero, its likely you are getting ganked.

Here is a list of heroes its very good versus since all can use it:

Arachna - Every slow attack gives a charge.
Moon Queen - Tends to spam her nuke alot
Scout - Vanish gives you charges
Magebane - Tends to blink alot.
Slither - If he uses Toxin wards he is doomed
Madman - Stalks alot
Soulstealer - Razes alot
Maliken - You get charges when he switches with his second skill

Nymphora - Uses spells alot
Blacksmith - Uses spells alot
Thunderbringer - Uses spells alot
Pyromancer - Uses spells alot
Defiler - Spams nuke alot
Glacius - Same as above
Hellbringer - Uses a fair amount of spells
Puppet Master - ? Why not, its only 210 gold.
Demented Shaman - Heals alot
Succubus - Uses a fair amount of spells
Voodoo Jester - Uses a fair amount of spells
Torturer - Uses spells alot

Armaddon - Countered. If he uses goo he heals you for the slow. If he Spine Bursts he does less damage. This guy charges you up fast.
Accursed - Uses a fair amount of spells
Electrician - Spams his disgusting spells
Pharaoh - Spams rockets.

So the conclusion is: Use it in most dual lanes. Use it versus the worst spammers in Solo lanes.

*I might rework this area a bit.

Void Talisman 1500 $ Ghost scepter in Dota

Grants 7 to all stats (133 HP - 91 Mana) and the ability to enter Ghost form for 4 seconds. While in ghost form you cannot be attacked by physical damage and you cant deal physical damage. You also take -6.9 magic armor (33% more spell damage).

Situational item: Use for heroes that do not use physical attacks in late game (Most Intelligence Heroes) but you tend to die to a fed physical DPS like Madman, Magebane or Swiftblade.

Iron Shield 550 $ Poor Mans Shield/PMS in Dota

A nice initiation item. Get it after starting gear if you have problems surviving due to physical herass in early game. Gives 6 agility and 100% chance to block 20 hero damage (10 for ranged), and 60% change to block 20 creep damage (10 for ranged). Can be used for:

Madman
Magebane
Chronos
Blood Hunter
Dark Lady
Zephyr - Maybe is useful, need to test it.

Well, its an itiation item for 550 gold, no big deal. Sell it in midgame / lategame. Use it if you get herassed alot as a melee agility hero. Other hero types often handle it better.

Its a direct counter to Arachna, Slither and Blood Hunters ultimate!
